WP3 - Learning Objects collection and generation

Objectives

The objectives of this workpackage are to collect and create learning objects, to be used by internal evaluation cycles and for user trials (WP11).

Description of work

This workpackage, coordinated by partner 11, will select content that is suitable for chosen users trials themes using existing Digital Repositories.
Existing owned materials, newly developed or adapted for MOBIlearn, as well as publicly available resources, are or will be described using IEEE LOM metadata, in XML, suitable for entry in the XML repository. In this process, the IEEE LOM specification will be scrutinised for its suitability for describing learning resources in a mobile context. In fact, although there is already a base of learning objects within the content partners, it could be necessary to augment these according to mobile delivery requirements.
The resources will be highly modular and compact in size to aid in their ease of reuse. Existing resources will be assessed for their level of granularity in their current format versus what would be appropriate to maximise their utility for reuse. These may be deconstructed to form resources that are more suited to reusability. This activity has implications for the level of granularity of the resources. The US Advanced Defence Learning programme has reviewed the levels of granularity used within a number of available learning systems and found that these generally conform to a 4-tier model of courses from the lowest level discrete resource to a course offering.

Deliverables

  • PM24: D3.1 Set of learning objects and report

Milestones and expected result

The result of this WP will be a collection of learning objects for project evaluation (WP2 and WP11). Furthermore this WP will produce a report describing the review of IEEE LOM specification for learning objects delivery in a mobile environment.
PM6 M3.1 Initial set of adapted learning objects for use in WP 11.
