Consortium

The MOBIlearn project is based on a partnership that is truly international (partners coming from nine European countries and countries outside EU, including the USA, Israel, Switzerland, and Australia), capable and influential.

The partnership includes well-known Universities and public bodies with a large user-base, mobile operators of four countries, leading European software and learning technologies companies, World-class mobile devices manufacturers, market analysis consultants, publishers and content providers. Those partners bring a real cross-disciplinary know-how, with expertise in pedagogy, adaptive interfaces, collaborative learning, context awareness, business modelling and e-learning technologies.

NEED FOR EUROPEAN AND INTERNATIONAL DIMENSION

The success of the mobile learning will strongly depend on the availability of a reference platform in order to be able to carry out tests on the operation and performances of the system. This can only be achieved through two main factors:

  • The establishment of a powerful consortium of companies covering mobile equipment manufacturers, telecom operators, service providers, software and content developers and users with the aim of prototyping and integrating the whole system.
  • Availability of GPRS/UMTS networks to implement the MOBIlearn software architecture to prepare all the necessary know-how as enabling technology for the product definition and deployment.

Both of them are achieved through the present project; without the required funding, the consortium could not support the whole technical work to be done to assess the specification and to develop the prototype in due time to impose European leadership in this area. The wide participation in the present consortium of European key player companies gives a strategic importance to the proposed project to allow the European industry to acquire and maintain a leading role in interactive wireless learning. The MOBIlearn Consortium has been shaped also considering the OCP report recommendation that, since the educational research community needs to be convinced of the potential of new Ambient Intelligent technologies, educational researchers and technology developers should collaborate to create intelligent, 'lean-back' systems and applications dedicated to learning needs and processes.

PARTNER LIST

The MOBIlearn project, coordinated by GIUNTI Ricerca and co-funded by the European Commission (IST Programme), and with supporting actions by NSF/USA and DEST/AU, exhibits its latest achievements in the research of next-generation paradigms and interfaces for technology supported learning in a mobile environment. The MOBIlearn project involves 24 partners from the European Community, Israel, Switzerland, USA and Australia. The Consortium is formed by:

PARTICIPATION FROM USA

The "Agreement for scientific and technological cooperation between the European Community and the Government of the United States of America" recognises the pursuing of research and technological activities in a number of areas of common interest such as information and communication technologies. Thanks to the implementing arrangement of the EU-USAG between the European Commission (EC) and the National Science Foundation (NSF), specifically addressing co-operative activities in the field of eLearning, the MOBIlearn project has been able to involve the Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology/OKI, considering that the participation in each other's research and development activities, on a basis of reciprocity, will provide mutual benefits to USA and EU partners, working on the same subjects.
