The Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation (Fraunhofer IFF) in Magdeburg is engaged in applied research and development in the sector of corporate strategy, corporate logistics and production systems. The Institute offers services in development and support of production-oriented rationalization and automation. The work focuses on optimisation of company structures and processes and development of market-oriented products to enhance the competitiveness of European industry. Laboratories with the latest technology and permanent basic research make the Fraunhofer Institute an attractive proposition for industry, public clients and international research partners. The Institute has a staff of about 100 employees. The department Planning and Visualization Techniques (PVT) includes among other activities the areas virtual reality applications, modelling and simulation and 3D-CAD-applications in engineering. IFF participated in various European research projects. Motivation of the participation in MOBIlearn is to contribute with the experience in methodologies for the efficient modelling of highly interactive virtual environments. Also our experience in shared virtual environments will be brought into the project. We want to enlarge our knowledge in the field of user-friendly VR application for practical use in different areas. In the educational/training environment we see a promising domain for future application of Virtual Reality Technology and great benefits for society.
