23.9 million lines (31 December 2001). Inclusive of markets outside Italy,
TIM has a total of 50.7 million lines (31 December 2001). The Telecom
Italia Group's most internationally active unit, TIM has long been a lead
technological innovator and a driver of the take-up of mobile telephony
in Italy and internationally. In 1997 it was the first company to launch
SMS messaging; in 2001 an average of 13 million messages were carried
over its network every day. TIM is currently focusing on the take-up of
innovative and advanced services for wireless data transmission over integrated
technological platforms (WAP, GPRS). Completion of nationwide GPRS network
coverage at the end of 2000 and the rollout of GPRS service in May 2001
were vital steps in the evolution from second generation GSM mobile telephony
to the third generation UMTS standard, which TIM is preparing to adopt.
