TELECOM Italia (TI, I)

The Telecom Italia Group is ICT leader in Italy and a top player worldwide, thanks in particular to its TIM unit.
Market challenges are met through combining:

  • technological innovation
  • customer loyalty enhancement
  • cost control
  • operating efficiency.

The Group operates in:

  • Wireline Telephony
  • Mobile Telephony
  • Internet, Media and Directories
  • Satellite Telecommunications

Building upon hints technological leadership, the Group is oriented towards:

  • consolidating its number one position in the domestic fixed line and mobile markets
  • through TIM, strengthening international reach.

Alongside fixed line and mobile telecommunications in gross areas such as the Internet, the Group is involved in:

  • Information Technology
  • Research and development activities.

At present the Group operates outside Italy in 19 countries, spanning fixed line and mobile telephony, and information marketing and directories. The focus for the future is mobile telephony, particularly in Latin America where TIM is building the first Pan-American GSM network.

Mobile telephony
TELECOM Italia Mobile (TIM) runs Europe´s single largest GSM network in terms of line numbers, and is Italy's number one wireless company with 23.9 million lines (31 December 2001). Inclusive of markets outside Italy, TIM has a total of 50.7 million lines (31 December 2001). The Telecom Italia Group's most internationally active unit, TIM has long been a lead technological innovator and a driver of the take-up of mobile telephony in Italy and internationally. In 1997 it was the first company to launch SMS messaging; in 2001 an average of 13 million messages were carried over its network every day. TIM is currently focusing on the take-up of innovative and advanced services for wireless data transmission over integrated technological platforms (WAP, GPRS). Completion of nationwide GPRS network coverage at the end of 2000 and the rollout of GPRS service in May 2001 were vital steps in the evolution from second generation GSM mobile telephony to the third generation UMTS standard, which TIM is preparing to adopt.
